Do's and Don'ts of getting Recruited

Do's and Don'ts

This page is designed to give you insight into the Do's and Don't of trying to get recruited.

Do's

1- Stay active in the procees by checking emails and text daily.

2- Start contacting coaches about your interest in thier schools after your Junior year.

3- When talking with a coach always refer to them by Coach and then their last name.

4- Send information promptly once a coach request it.

5- Make sure you visit a college before you decide on attending it.

6- On college visits you do most of the talking.

7- Upon visiting a college make sure you apply first and get them you academic info. This is important because you want all the answers once there.

8- Try to go watch a game live when the coach does not know you are there so you can see their true side of coaching.

9- Let mom and dad know your true feelings about where you want to go.

10- Keep your grades up during your senior year so it does not affect your college offer after you graduate HS.

Don'ts

1- Never tell a coach if they invite you in for a college visit, tryout, combine or workout that you can't make time for that. By turning them down because you have to work, attend a fall ball game, play in a tourney game, or your not willing to travel a little bit you are basically telling that coach you either do not understand the recruiting process or you really do not have interest in their offer.

2- Never email a coach or text them and forget to sign your name, where you are from and what your grad year is. (coaches do not save players numbers in their phones)

3- Never ask the coach the question "What other programs are going to be at the event" What you are saying to them in all reality is that you really do not want to have them recruit you but if another school is there you might show up.

4- Never let mom and dad answer your text for you or your emails. Coaches are very smart (most with Master Degrees) They can tell when the language is not that of a player.

5- Never ask a coach how much scholarship money you might get before they have even had a chance to see you work out.

This page is designed to help you understand the process. The way the recruiting world works is changing to where most programs go to events with multiple players are represented. That way they can go to one place and get more than one player. By hoping that a coach might come to one of your games you are reducing the chances of getting recruited. There is no guarantee of any action coming your way at a game or a chance you might get a pitch to hit. A coach is losing their chance to recruit you by sitting there. Even if you did get some action in a game no coach will recruit a player that does not come to a workout so the coach can see everything they need to that the game did not show. That is why the "Workout" is the second stage of recuitment and the one that will give you the most insight as to where you fit in the process.
